US box imports rise again from low base, more gains expected

IMPORT cargo though major American container ports appeared to end a two and a half year decline in December and is on track to show gains through the first half of 2010, according to the monthly Port Tracker report released by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates.

"The US economy is experiencing positive growth, with imports on the rise as a result of re-stocking and a rising consumer demand," Hackett Associates founder Ben Hackett said. "Consumer sentiment remains cautious, however."

Carriers turn to extra slow steaming

Rising fuel costs have placed slow steaming squarely back into the limelight and driven carriers to a new level in slow steaming.

Rising fuel costs are a major contributing factor to the move to take slow steaming to the next step. Bunker fuel costs stood at US$350 per ton in June last year, but have continued to grow from last year to their current level of $500 per ton.

Shipping lines are hoping that the next phase of slow steaming will involve a return to profit for these companies.

New Investment

Prepress – We will develop eBook to enhance web-based blues approval. This will shorten the lead time of blue approval and avail our partners to save the consumption of paper and energy on blues output and delivery.

Printing & Binding – We have commissioned a 4c Perfector Heidleburg Printing Press and a brand-new Kolbus Casing-In machine to be installed in 2Q 2010. Higher efficiency and capacity will help efficient performance at lower cost, which can eventually contribute to our long-term partners.

Staff welfare – A 15-storey high staff dormitory will be ready in early March, enabling local middle management staff to have an individual accommodation.

Paper Policy

1010 enjoys volume purchasing discount from Chen Ming / Gold East / White A in 1st quarter of 2010, albeit pulp prices shown an upward trend in BHKP China Index. The savings can eventually be reflected with our long terms partners.

Shipping Policy

With combined effect of slower steaming vessels and tighter shipping capacity in 2010, we suggest publishers to avoid the traffic jam in traditional peak season.

Green Policy

  • Goal for 2010 – a green roof will be installed up to 40% coverage
  • We will suggest clients to abandon Kraftwrapping in carton. Cost of Kraftwrapping material will be donated to Environment-caring Association.
